The Story of Battle Cry

At the Sons of Liberty, we are making American Single Malt Whiskies that are leading the craft revolution. And our Battle Cry is no exception.

This American Single Malt Whiskey is born from a Belgian-style ale. Using 100% malted grains, Battle Cry incorporates rye malt and honey malt, for added spice notes and sweetness respectively. Fermented with a Trappist-style yeast strain and aged in newly charred American Oak Barrels, Battle Cry is a unique experience from beginning to end - hints of dark fruit and spices, such as anise and black licorice, with a distinct sweetness.

Toffee and honey on the nose, big but sweet. Sweet and smoky on the palate and that sweetness carries through on the long finish.

"The palate is more traditionally “American single malt” than Uprising, the burly wood making a strong showing, but it is tempered, quite impressively, by all that fruit. Here it showcases apples, some cinnamon, and a brown sugar sweetness that pours on the apple pie notes. Chewy, with nutty, slightly Madeirized notes on the finish, the whiskey grows on you over time as the more raw, wood-heavy characteristics fade a bit." (4/29/18)

Christopher Null - Drinkhacker

The mouth is a sweet, sticky, syrupy, cola-like goodness, like the cola syrup that oozes out of the fountain when there’s a pinch in the soda hose. It’s really molasses-like in how chewy and substantial it is. I’m reminded of the dark amber flypaper strips hanging in my grandparent’s home in North Carolina. The unguent beaded up on those long strips in a way that was almost like pearls. Come to think of it, pearls would be the perfect spirit gem for this whiskey. The attraction of pearls is precisely that they are natural, unadorned, and un-ostentatious. We are talking about a classic with very broad appeal.

The finish is quick and Houdini like. Which is to say that it’s so damn drinkable. The readiness of my lips for another sip reminds me of mead. I’m not getting the funky notes I’d expect from the Belgian yeast. And it’s not making me want to enter battle. Rather, I’m ready to draw up terms for a peaceable transfer of the rest of the bottle into my glass." (2/20/18)

"Nose: Orange marmalade on toast, rich butterscotch, manuka honey, cinder toffee, sweet malt, treacle cake, coffee cream chocolates and charred oak. Pretty big!

Palate: Caramel fudge, buttered popcorn, pancakes with Nutella, cloves, maple syrup on bacon, BBQ steak flavored crisps, smoked rack of ribs. Big, sweet and chewy with plenty of depth. Long, with sweet caramel and charred wood...it's an absolute must buy if you live on, or visit, the northern end of the US East Coast." (Published in The New Single Malt Whiskey)
